Projects - Cerney Castle
Phase 3: Second Archaeological Dig, January 2020
The aim of the second dig was to look for any evidence of human occupation associated with the iron working uncovered in 2019, and to obtain dateable evidence for activity at the site.
We were able to use a mechanical digger to start a new 10 x 15 metre trench in the area of the 'tump', the obvious mound lying at the School Lane end of Hill View.
This revealed a stone feature made up of two areas of compacted sandstone not far from the site of the iron furnace.
Unfortunately, the water table was very high following a wet winter and the area quickly filled with water making the cleaning of the stones impossible.
Consequently it is not possible to say if the two features are from the same date though a few fragments of iron pan were recovered in the vicinity of the stones.
Equally these may be just a geological deposit.
